In 1993, he was appointed as the first Honorary Consul-General of Bangladesh in Scotland and in 1995 he was made a Member of the British Empire,In 2000 he was awarded a Doctorate in Business Administration (Honouris Causa) by Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh. 2007 saw Heriot-watt University Doctor of Letters, D.Litt., and Edinburgh’s Napier University award him Doctor of the University, D.University. Chairman of the Commonwealth Society of Edinburgh and the BanglaScot Foundation.
