Brief info
Ohid Ahmed is a veteran local politician in the East End of London. He has served as the first statutory Deputy Mayor for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, he is also been a local councillor for Lansbury Ward since 2002. During his tenure as a councillor he has held various Cabinet roles.
He has also been a parliamentary candidate for the Labour Party, and a local government advisor.
In 2002 he was elected as a Labour party councillor for Lansbury Ward in Tower Hamlets. He was later appointed Lead member for Education and Youth services in 2004 where he helped start up the boroughs first young mayor scheme, which is now a borough wide success and engages 1000s of local people in democracy. He was later appointed Lead Member for Regeneration, Localisation and Community Partnership in 2007 where he worked hard for more affordable housing in our borough alongside refurbished estates and transformed neighbourhoods such as the Ocean Estate and Blackwall Reach. In 2009 he was appointed as the Lead member for Resources and Performance, whilst the country was in economical turmoil, he worked hard to ensure front line services were not being cut and found ways to save money whilst protecting council services.
As an active Labour party member and supporter, Ohid established Labour friends of Bangladesh in 2006 to give British Bangladeshi members from across the country a platform within the Labour Party. He also contested as the Labour Party candidate during the 2010 General election in West Suffolk, he was one of only two British Bangladeshi candidates put forward by the party during this election.
From 2010-2014, he has been the Deputy Mayor of Tower Hamlets under Executive Mayor and held 4 cabinet portfolios.
His proudest moments in politics have been making Tower Hamlets the first London Living Wage Borough; building more affordable homes than anywhere else in the UK and replacing the Education Maintenance Allowance to help young people stay in education and investing in community policing to keep our residents safe.
Ohid is also an accountant by profession and Director of a successful tourism agency based in East London. He holds a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of East London.
